         <description><![CDATA[Three UMass field hockey players and one coach traveled to Virginia Beach this weekend to compete in USA Field Hockey's High Performance National Championship. Senior midfielder Mary Shea, sophomore back Jackie Tait, and assistant coach Kelly Dostal are playing for the New England team, while incoming freshman goalkeeper Alesha Widdall is playing for the Pennsylvania/California team. The six-team tournament began on Saturday, June 14 with pool play and concludes with the medal round on Saturday, June 21. The US team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be selected following the tournament.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[UMass field hockey, fresh off its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001, kicked off the beginning of its 2008 spring exhibition season last weekend with games vs. Yale, Holy Cross, and UConn. UMass and Yale played two 40-minute periods, with the Minutewomen outscoring the Bulldogs, 5-1. In two 40-minute periods vs. Holy Cross, UMass outscored the Crusaders, 4-2. On Sunday at UConn, the teams played three periods with the Huskies outscoring the Minutewomen, 4-0. The teams played two periods of 7-on-7 to a 0-0 tie.]]></description>

The University of Massachusetts field hockey team was one of the teams acknowledged for their excellence in the classroom. The teams recognized had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Additionally, UMass had three student-athletes placed on the Division I National Academic Squad. Freshman Courtney Mayerick, sophomore Kylie Jelley, and junior Erin Parker were honored.]]></description>

The team will play four games between March 12th and 16th in Buenos Aries, Argentina against the Argentina Under-21 team. The tour is in preparation for the Junior World Cup to be held in Boston in August of 2009. The team is lead by head coach Andrew Griffiths of Lafayette and Tracey Fuchs. In addition to Sowry, Alesha Widdall of UMass will also be participating as a member of the USA U-21 team. Last week, Sowry announced the addition of Widdall to next year's team.]]></description>
