Despite being several years out of college competition, cross-country still beckons, but in a different way. The UMass track and field teams traveled to Princeton University over the weekend where the men competed in the IC4A Championships and the women competed in the ECAC Championships. Sophomore Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) had the top performance of the weekend after placing sixth in the discus throw. Wilson broke the UMass school record with a throw of 155 feet, 9 inches. Wilson surpassed Natalie Hart's throw of 153 feet, 8 inches that was set back in 1993. This weekend, both the men's and women's track and field teams placed seventh at the New England Outdoor Championships. The top performance of the day came from red-shirted freshman Shiyi Zan who placed seventh in the 5K. With a time of 17:08.64, Zan now holds the fifth fastest time at UMass and qualified for the ECAC Championships. For the men, the top performance of the day came from the trio of sophomore Nicolai Naranjo, senior Nils Fischer, and sophomore Jonathan Pierce. Naranjo took first place in the 5K with a time of 14:22.57, while Fischer took third place in 14:29.40. Pierce finished sixth with a time of 14:36.84. Overall, the men placed fourth out of eleven teams, while the women placed sixth out of twelve teams. Both the men and women improved on last year's finish of eighth place for the men and tenth for the women. Overall, Rhode Island took first for both the men and women. UMass scored 62 points for the men and 60 points for the women. Men's Day One Results | Women's Day One Results
After the first day of competition at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, UMass currently sits in fourth place for both teams with the women being tied with La Salle. Overall, Rhode Island is presently in first place for both the men and women. Christina DeRosa and Andrew McCann had the top performances of day after both took first place in the 10K run. DeRosa set an Atlantic 10 record with a time of 35:40.68 and broke the A-10 record of 36:07.62 that she set last year. McCann also set an Atlantic 10 record with a time of 30:04.87 to qualify for the New England and IC4A Championships. In addition, McCann now holds the third fastest time at UMass and set a new facility record at the UMass Track and Field Complex. This weekend, UMass will host the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the UMass Track and Field Complex. The two day event will begin Saturday and conclude on Sunday with both days beginning at 9:30 AM. This will be the first time that UMass has ever hosted the Atlantic 10 Championships. Live video streaming of the Championship will be available through UMass and the Atlantic 10 web site's All-Access package. This past weekend, the UMass track and field teams traveled to Princeton University to take part in the Larry Ellis Invitational. Sophomore Lisa Wilson was the star of the weekend after dominating the throwing competition and recording the second-best throw in school history in three different events. Wilson began by taking third place in the hammer throw competition with a distance of 168 feet, 11 inches. Her throw also qualified her for the New England Championships and the ECAC Championships. Wilson followed by taking second place in the discus throw with a distance of 152 feet. Finally, Wilson took third in the shot put competition with a throw of 43 feet, 10.75 inches. Wilson previously held the third-best throw in the shot put and discus throw. Next weekend, both teams will travel to the University of New Hampshire to compete in the UNH Pre-Conference Meet.
