         <description><![CDATA[Seven newcomers will join the University of Massachusetts men's swimming and diving program for the 2008-09 campaign as announced by head coach Russ Yarworth. The Minutemen are coming off their 10th Atlantic 10 Conference Championship - the most in league history. The class is made up of five swimmers and two divers: Ryan Brooks (Dedham, Mass.), Matt Burak (North Easton, Mass./Univ. of Rhode Island), Jason Cook (Amherst, Mass.), Conner Dunn (Brookfield, Conn.), Kyle Jennings (Columbus, Ohio), Peter Saunders (Andover, Mass.), and Joey Sbordon (Franklin, Mass.). "We've managed to replace a very strong senior class with some excellent young talent. Bringing in some of the top high school swimmers in Massachusetts (four individual state championships this year alone between them), is a testament to how our program is being perceived," said Yarworth.]]></description>

Sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.), junior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.), senior Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.), and freshman Andrew Willbrant (Londonderry, N.H.) were honored as this seasons Most Valuable Performers.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[Senior Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) and junior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) wrapped up their season this past weekend after competing in the NCAA Zone Diving Regional at the Alumni Arena Natatorium, in Buffalo, New York. Both Upperco and Rappe improved their dives from last year, with Rappe finishing seventh out of 31 divers in the three-meter dive with a score of 603.80 and fifth overall in the one-meter dive with a score of 581.25. Upperco finished fourth overall out of 22 divers on both boards with a score 532.65 in the one-meter and 563.65 on the three-meter board.]]></description>

For the women's team, senior Samantha Demty (Seekonk, Mass.) was named, while sophomore Michael Berthaume (Hampden, Mass.) and senior John Weaver (East Longmeadow, Mass.) were named to the men's team. The swimming and diving teams wrapped up the regular season at the end of February with the Atlantic 10 Championships. Overall, the women placed fourth, while the men took home their tenth A-10 title.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[After sitting atop the leader board for the first three days, the Massachusetts men and Richmond women closed out championship titles at the Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday evening at the Flickinger Center. Both programs extended their consistency, as the Spiders were crowned the conference champions for the seventh consecutive year, while the Minutemen won for the seventh time in the past eight seasons. Massachusetts finished with a total of 791.5 points, an astounding 224 point lead over second-place St. Bonaventure. The Minutewomen battled to the end for a fourth place with a score of 430.5 points after squeezing by Fordham by 6.5 points. The men's swimming coach Russ Yarworth was named Men's Coach of the Year. It was a great day for the Massachusetts diving squad as coach Mandy Hixon was named Diving Coach of the Year for both men's and women's diving. Senior Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) was named Men's Most Outstanding Diver while junior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) was named Women's Most Outstanding Diver.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[Senior A.J. Vozella and Red-shirted senior Kristen Bakanowski were named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week. Vozella led the Minutemen to a victory over Fordham where he broke the Joseph R. Rogers Jr. Pool record in the 200 yard freestyle (1:41.01) and also finished first in the 100 yard freestyle (46.97). Kristen Bakanowski placed first in the pole vault competition with a height of 12 feet, 1.50 inches at the URI Invitational to replace the school record she set last year of 12 feet. Here height also qualifies her for the New England Championships and ECAC. Bakanowski was also named the A-10 Women's Track Performer of the Week. Bakanowski and Vozella will both be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday afternoon.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[The UMass swimming and diving team split against Fordhamon Saturday in the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. The men's swimming and diving team beat Atlantic 10 rival Fordham 185 to 112 making them 5-2 in the dual meets. The Minutewomen lost 112 to 186 to bring them to 4-3 in dual meet action. A large crowd gathered for the UMass Senior Day and witnessed a stellar performance from senior A.J. Vozella (Weymouth, Mass.) as he broke the Jospeh R. Rogers Jr. Pool record in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:41.01). A.J. Vozella also finished first in the 100 yd. freestyle (46.97). The UMass men's squad finished first in 12 of the 16 events making them a perfect 11-0 all-time against Fordham.]]></description>
