2008-09 Schedule
An 18 game slate in the Mullins Center, the Ice Breaker Tournament featuring Boston University, Michigan State and North Dakota and another highly competitive season of Hockey East excitement highlight the 2008-09 University of Massachusetts schedule as announced by head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon. Additionally, the non-conference schedule also features tilts against Cornell, Rensselaer, St. Lawrence, and the Dartmouth Ledyard National Bank Classic featuring Bemidji State, Army and host Dartmouth.

The Chicago Wolves closed the 72nd American Hockey League season on Tuesday night with a 5-2 win against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins for a 4-1 series win to take the 2008 Calder Cup Championship. University of Massachusetts hockey alum Matt Anderson made his 25th Calder Cup Playoff appearance and 39th overall with the Wolves. In this year's Cup Playoffs, he finished with one goal, one assist and an even rating. The Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the series before falling in Games 4 and 5.

University of Massachusetts hockey alum Matt Anderson and the Chicago Wolves have a chance to win the American Hockey League's Calder Cup on Tuesday night when they host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Tuesday night at All-State Arena. This will be Anderson's 24th Calder Cup Playoff appearance and 38th overall with the Wolves. In this year's Cup Playoffs, he has one goal, one assist and an even rating. UMass Places 12 On Hockey East All-Academic Team

Headlined by Mike Kostka earning Distinguished Scholar accolades, 12 members of the University of Massachusetts hockey team were named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team as announced by the league office. UMass had the third highest amount of student-athletes honored just behind Maine (16) and UMass Lowell (13). To be named to the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must achieve a 3.0 grade point average in each semester of competition during the school year.

The University of Massachusetts Hockey Team and the Pond Club would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our 8th Annual Pond Club Golf Tournament to raise funds for our hockey program. We are proud to announce that this year's event is again being held Monday June 9th at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, site of the 2004 Women's US Open Golf Tournament. Every golfer will receive a complimentary gift for participating in this year's event. Each golfer will also receive a sleeve of UMass logo golf balls, pre-tournament breakfast, post tournament dinner, and mulligans & string - all part of this package. Mass Attack Signs Filiou, Raiola And Wellman To NLI's

UMass hockey head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon announced today that three future Minutemen have signed National Letters of Intent. Casey Wellman will join UMass for the 2008-2009 season, while Anthony Raiola and Eric Filiou will join the squad in 2009. Wellman scored 55 points for the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders of the USHL this season. Raiola was named All-Minnesota Honorable Mention and will play in USHL next year with Sioux Falls, while Filiou will play a second season with the Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL) after being named the league's Rookie of the Year.

Jon Quick Stars In AHL Playoff Debut With Manchester

Heading into Game 2 on Friday, the Manchester Monarchs were already trailing the Providence Bruins, 1-0, in the best-of-seven Calder Cup Playoff series. Looking to turn things around, former UMass All-American goaltender Jon Quick was given the starting nod over Jonathan Bernier who started Game 1. Despite succumbing to the AHL's top team, Quick was spectacular in giving Manchester a chance. He finished with 38 saves on 39 shots in an effort eerily similar to his NCAA Tournament debut on Mar. 23, 2007 against Clarkson.

Leaderer Added To Frozen Four Skills Challenge Team

The NCAA has announced the final rosters for the 2008 Frozen Four Skills Challenge, which will be held April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. UMass senior defenseman David Leaderer has been named to the East Team roster as one of three alternates added last week. The Frozen Four Skills Challenge will be televised live on ESPNU at 9 PM this Friday night.

P.J. Fenton will be the live guest for Tuesday night's 580 AM WTAG SportsNight with Mike Messina between 6-7 PM after signing an amateur tryout contract with the Worcester Sharks last week. Fenton was drafted by the San Jose Sharks, the parent club of Worcester, in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He finished his career at UMass this season as one of the most prolific scorers in program history.

Leaderer was named New England's Joe Tomasello Unsung Hero, while Kostka was named to the Division I All-Star Team.

The San Jose Sharks announced on April 1 that they have signed P.J. Fenton to an amateur tryout contract (ATO). Fenton signed the contract just weeks after he completed his career at the University of Massachusetts. Fenton will play the remainder of the season with the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League.

The UMass Hockey team held its annual Reverse Raffle and Banquet this weekend to celebrate the 2007-2008 season. The coaching staff presented a number of awards, voted by the players, to members of the team who helped the squad on and off the ice throughout the duration of the season. Among the awards presented were the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards. The Minutemen also honored the team's six graduating seniors, Matt Burto, Patrick Dineen, P.J. Fenton, David Leaderer, Mike Kostka, and Assistant Equipment Manager Mike Scire. Each senior was given a gift to thank them for all of their efforts over the past four seasons. Head Coach Don "Toot" Cahoon also announced the captains for the 2008-2009 season. Cory Quirk and Brett Watson will wear the "C" for the Minutemen next season.

UMass sophomore hockey forward Will Ortiz has been selected to attend the NCAA Leadership Conference May 25th-27th in Orlando, Fla. The NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

Buffalo Sabres Sign Mike Kostka To Free Agent Contract

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced the team has signed free agent defenseman Mike Kostka, who just finished his senior season at the University of Massachusetts. Kostka also signed an amateur tryout contract (ATO) with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo's American Hockey League club for the remainder of its 2007-08 season.
