Torra Makes His Way To Class AAA
Matt Torra of Pittsfield is one step away from his ultimate goal. But that one step is still a pretty long one. Torra, 23, is a pitcher in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and last night he was scheduled to make his second start at Class AAA Tucson of the Pacific Coast League. Update: On June 21 vs. Las Vegas, Torra pitched seven innings allowing only one run on five hits with four strikeouts to earn his first victory with Tucson. (more)

The UMass baseball team and head coach Mike Stone were honored by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday for winning the 2008 Beanpot Championship by throwing out the first pitch of the Red Sox' 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. Senior catcher and team captain Bryan Garrity was given the honor of throwing the first pitch while his teammates looked on from behind the mound. The Minutemen defeated Boston College, 4-3, on April 15 at Fenway to claim their first Beanpot title since 2000. A week earlier, UMass beat Harvard, 3-0, in the semifinal game in Lynn, Mass. to earn its trip to the finals. The Minutemen have won four Beanpots since they started playing in the tournament in 1996. (more)

Minutemen Fall To Fordham, 13-10, In Season Finale
  • Box Score | Season Stats | Final Season Stats
After UMass jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the Fordham bats came to life and a late rally by the home club fell short, as the Minutemen (18-27, 11-16) fell to the Rams (29-24-1, 13-14 A-10), 13-10, to close the season on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Adam Tempesta drove in a season-high five runs to lead the Minutemen. UMass honored its four seniors prior to the game and all four produced during the game. Ryan Franczek (2-3, 2 R), Bryan Garrity (1-5), and Andy Tuetken all collected hits, while Aaron Smith pitched a scoreless inning. Fordham was led by Rich Goulian's 4-for-5, five-RBI day.

Comeback Falls Short As Minutemen Are Downed By Fordham, 4-3
  • Box Score | Season Stats
After being unable to solve Fordham starter Tom Davis for the first six innings, UMass scored two runs in seventh and one more in the eighth off reliever Chris Kaible but couldn't tie the game as the Minutemen (18-26, 11-15 A-10) fell to the Rams (28-24-1, 12-14 A-10), 4-3, on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. After Fordham scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the top of the seventh, Matt Gedman hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh that drove in two runs. Adam Tempesta drove in a run an inning later with a sacrifice fly, but Kaible was able to end the threat that inning and pitched a one-two-three ninth.
