Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

Recognizing that the “student” in every student-athlete is the most vital element, the University of Massachusetts Athletic Department goes to great lengths to ensure success in the classroom goes hand-in-hand with success in sports.

With a staff of five academic resource coordinators, seven graduate assistants and approximately 90-100 tutors, Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services Mike Jenkins oversees a group of devoted educators whose aim is to help the student-athlete in every way possible – from the choice of courses through the completion of a degree.

Two new school records were set under Jenkins’ watch in the 2001 spring semester, as 39.51 percent of student-athletes had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and 44.29 percent had a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher. This marked the 10th time in the last 13 semesters UMass student-athletes set a new academic record.

The home of Student-Athlete Services lies at the UMass Athletic Academic Enhancement Center, located on the second floor of Boyden Building. This work-study room is complete with 12 Macintosh computers, three LaserWriter printers and 15 study tables which can accomodate 50 student-athletes. There are also study rooms available to athletes at the William D. Mullins Center and Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

The goal at UMass is simple. On and off the field, provide student-athletes with the tools they need to succeed.
